How to Install WordPress on Mac with MAMP Buzz this

Posted by Prasada Martala Dec 31, 2009 View Comments

WordPress LogoMAMP stands for Macintosh, Apache, MySQL and PHP.  Using MAMP framework, you can access your  PHP server and MySQL server locally on your Mac. MAMP provides all the tools you need to run WordPress on your Mac. Four step process below guides you through the installation process for MAMP and WordPress on your Mac.

1. Install MAMP

Go to MAMP website, click on 'Download now' for MAMP. Current version of MAMP requires that your Mac be running on Mac OS X 10.4.x or later.

MAMP Download Page

MAMP Download Progress Bar

Once download is complete, click continue to proceed with installation. Read the License Agreement and click "Agree" to install.

MAMP License Agreement

Once the installation is complete, you should see a window with MAMP, MAMP PRO and Applications folders in it. Drag MAMP folder and drop it on to Applications folder. Application is installed when the contents are copied to Applications folder.

2. Basic MAMP configuration

Launch MAMP application from /Applications/MAMP/ You will see MAMP application window with options to Stop Servers, make changes to Preferences, Open start page along with status of Apache and MySQL servers.

MAMP StartPage

Now, click the Preferences button. Next, click over to "Ports." The default MAMP ports are 8888 for Apache, and 8889 for MySQL. If you use this configuration, you shouldn't get asked for your password, but you'd need to include the port number in the URL (localhost:8888). If you'd like to leave the port number out of the URL, change the Apache port to 80. If you are using port 80 as your MAMP Apache port, then you'll always be asked for your password.

MAMP Preferences (Ports)

On the PHP tab, you can select either PHP version 4, or 5. This generally won't effect WordPress, unless you're using a plugin that requires PHP 5.

Finally, on the Apache tab, set document root ( Default value would be /Applications/MAMP/htdocs ). This is where all of your files are going to be for your local web server. Once you're done editing the settings, click OK to save.

3. Start MAMP servers and Create Database

Click "Start Servers" from MAMP main window to start MySQL and Apache servers. Status is shown green when servers are started. If start page is not opened already, Click "open start page"  button and that will open MAMP page in the browser.

MAMP StartPage Browser

To create the database, go to phpMyAdmin tab. Under actions, give a name and press Create to create a database. Once the database is created, you can see it on left sidebar.

MAMP Create Database

4. Download and Install WordPress

Download the install WordPress from download page. Once done, locate "wordpress" folder and move all the contents from "wordpress" folder to MAMP document root folder ( e.g.: /Applications/MAMP/htdocs ). Now, go to wordpress page at http://localhost:port/wordpress to run the install. Provide database name, hostname, username and password to complete the installation. Alternatively, you can update this information at wp-config.php.

MAMP WordPress Blog Setup

Once the installation is complete, login to WordPress admin page at http://localhost:port/wp-login.php using the default login credentials generated for you. You may want to change the default password once you login to WordPress admin page.

MAMP WordPress LoginPage

From WordPress admin page, you can change themes, install plug-ins, edit settings and start adding blog posts on your locally installed server settings.

If you run into issues installing WordPress, you can refer to their handy installation guide here.

Blu-ray Managed copy Buzz this

Posted by Prasada Martala Dec 7, 2009 View Comments

Technology makes life easy. It also makes the consumer in you feel bad with it's advancements. Case in point - Blu-ray Managed copy. In an effort to discourage people from obtaining illegal copies of movies, AACS LA's managed copy for Blu-ray discs lets the Blu-ray disc owners make a copy of the movie. Once this feature is fully implemented by Studios, Hardware manufacturers and Technology companies, you would be able to make a full resolution backup copy of Blu-ray movie to various storage devices. This requires Blu-ray players to be connected to the internet so that your Blu-ray disc can be authenticated by servers managed by Studios or AACS before making a copy.

Even though all Blu-ray discs sold after Dec 4, 2009 are required to have Managed copy feature, none of the current generation blu-ray players and other BD devices do not support this feature. This means the expensive Blu-ray player you bought this holiday season would become obsolete when Hardware manufacturers start selling Managed copy compatible players early 2010. Additionally, Studios can charge you for this managed copy, which makes this feature not so popular with consumers.

A demonstration of managed copy feature:

Sony movies on Internet connected TVs & Blu-ray players Buzz this

Posted by Prasada Martala Dec 1, 2009 View Comments

Declining DVD sales and lackluster box-office performances are driving Hollywood studios and Consumer Electronics manufacturers to come up with new ways to increase their revenue streams. As this BusinessWeek's article and NY Times article report, Sony is experimenting with making some movies available through it's Internet ready Bravia TVs and Blu-ray players just before their DVD release. This new window, called as Home theatrical window is spaced between movie's theatrical release and it's DVD release so that,  interests of theatre owners and DVD retailers are equally served . Sony, with it's unique position as Hardware manufacturer and Movie studio owner, is trying to convince other Hollywood studios and content providers to join this experiment.

Even though HDTV and Blu-ray technology adoption is slow, there seems to be a section of viewers who are willing to pay a premium for watching movies on their big TV screens well before it's DVD release schedule. The quality of a typical internet streaming movie may be comparable to DVD quality but it doesn't match with Blu-ray quality. As Blu-ray technology becomes more mainstream, the popularity of this offering from Sony  is going to depend on the quality of the online stream and how it is priced compared to DVDs.
