It's official. James Cameron is "King of the World" again. Avatar overtook Titanic as the highest grossing movie ever. As of Sunday, Avatar had collected $1.858 billion worldwide ($1.303 billion foreign + $ 554.9 million domestic), beating the record held by Titanic for 13 years. But, if gross figures are adjusted for inflation, 1939’s Gone With The Wind, directed by Victor Fleming takes the top spot as the highest grossing film followed by Titanic and Avatar.
In the US, Titanic is still the highest grossing film with $600.8 million. Avatar, with $554.9 million gross is poised to take the top spot soon in US as well. Avatar's success at box office is fueled by 3D technology. Excellent visual effects and futuristic storyline drew audience to watch the movie in 3D helping the movie with record box office performance.
