For the first time in three years, the Netherlands overtook Denmark as the country with highest broadband penetration. According to data from the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), The Netherlands tops the list of countries with highest broadband penetration. For every 100 residents, Netherlands has 38.09 broadband subscribers, followed by Denmark(36.09) and Norway(34.51).

Even though US is at 15th position with 26.65% broadband penetration, it has the highest number of broadband subscribers in the world (81.2 million), followed by Japan(30.9 million), Germany(24 million), France(18.7 million), the UK(17.7 million), Korea(15.9 million) and Italy(11.8 million). These 7 countries combined have 72.5% subscribers.

While Greece posted a 5.89% yearly increase in broadband subscribers from 11.08% to 16.97%, Finland saw a 0.69% decrease from 30.42% to 29.73% for June 2008-2009 period.
According to the data from the government of India, there are 7.5 million broadband subscribers in India. That makes broadband penetration in India to be at mere 0.65%. If we consider the 54 million active internet users in India and expect to provide all of them with broadband connectivity, that would mean a 4.73% broadband penetration which still is low for a country of size of India. But, like everywhere else, it is going to take many years to reach such a connectivity level.
